Curious Minds Ask…
1. When is the tax filing deadline?
The IRS deadline is usually April 15th each year. If it falls on a weekend or holiday, it may shift a day or two. Extensions are available, but remember—an extension to file is not an extension to pay.
2. What documents do I need to file my taxes?
You’ll need your W-2s, 1099s, income records, identification, and any proof of deductions or credits (like childcare receipts or education expenses). Business owners will also need expense records.
3. How long will it take to get my refund?
Most refunds arrive within 7–21 days when you e-file and use direct deposit. Paper returns take longer. The fastest way? File early and choose direct deposit.
4. What happens if I miss the deadline or owe the IRS?
If you miss the deadline, file as soon as possible to reduce penalties. If you owe the IRS, you can set up a payment plan—but ignoring it can lead to bigger problems like garnishments or liens.
5. Can I still file if I don’t have my W-2 yet?
Yes! Employers must send W-2s by January 31st. If you haven’t received it, you can use your last pay stub in some cases, or we can help request a copy directly from the IRS.
6. What tax credits or deductions can I qualify for?
It depends on your situation, but the most common are:
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
Child Tax Credit
Education credits (American Opportunity, Lifetime Learning)
Business or self-employment deductions
We’ll review everything to make sure you don’t leave money on the table.
7. Do I have to pay taxes on unemployment, side hustles, or cash income?
Yes—all income must be reported. That includes unemployment, Uber/Lyft, DoorDash, rental income, or cash-based work. The IRS already gets most of these records, so it’s better to file it than risk penalties.
8. How do self-employment or business taxes work?
If you’re self-employed, you pay both income tax and self-employment tax (Social Security & Medicare). You may also need to make quarterly estimated tax payments. Don’t worry—we’ll walk you through it.
9. Can you help if I made a mistake on my return or need to amend it?
Absolutely! We can file an amended return (Form 1040X) to correct mistakes or add missing information. This can also help you claim extra refunds if something was overlooked.
10. Why should I choose Grahamith to file my taxes instead of doing it myself?
Because we don’t just file taxes—we maximize your refund, keep you compliant, and give you peace of mind. We stay up-to-date on every IRS rule so you don’t have to, and we’re here year-round—not just tax season.
